Your brand purpose drives everything you do; it’s your brand’s superpower.
In 1979 Tajfel and Turner proposed there are three mental processes involved in creating our social identity. These processes are mental shortcuts, designed to help us to categorise the world and separate it into “us” (in-groups) and “them” (out-groups). Belonging to a group also helps us to build our pride and self-esteem. The three-stage process of building you social identity looks like this:
Social Categorisation – Social Identification – Social Comparison
So how do we bring it all together and create a connection with your audience?
1. What’s your inspiration for existing?
This is your brand’s origin and the beginning of its story. Use it as the starting place for understanding what differentiates your brand from the competition.
2. What are your brand’s beliefs?
What do you stand for? Your beliefs are the hook that will help your audience to identify with your brand. They’re also the driving force behind your brand’s actions. Helping you to stay consistent and transparent.
3. What, or who is your arch-nemesis?
What do you stand against? As we mentioned in our previous post about creating brand theatre. Defining your brand’s villain creates conflict, which is the key to any great story. It also helps you to double down on that sense of belonging, because your brand will be utilising our natural instincts to compare social groups.
4. What human value does your brand embody?
Does your brand elicit joy, enable connection, inspire exploration, evoke pride or impact society?
What is the common thread that ties these 4 elements together? It will take time to get your answer, but once you know?
You will understand why your brand exists and can begin to build your brand’s tribe.
