Social media gifting scheme adds new twists [Video]

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Watch out for a social media scheme this holiday season. Each holiday season this scam pops back up, but it’s back this year with a newer twist.

The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau says the older version was called “The Secret Sister.”

the latest version revolves around exchanging bottles of wine or bourbon. Another suggests buying $10 gifts online.

We’re also hearing about still another twist that asks you to submit your email address to a list where people get to pick a name and send money to strangers to “pay it forward.”

These are all a scam.

In all of these versions you give away your personal information.

You’re left buying and shipping gifts or money to people you don’t know and hope someone will reciprocate with the promised number of gifts in return.

The BBB says unfortunately it often doesn’t happen.

Like any other pyramid scheme, it relies on recruiting people to keep the scam going.
