Second graders surprised by Slugger, celebrates 5th year of kids’ financial literacy program [Video]

AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) – Teaching the next generation of workers and consumers the value of a dollar is the goal of Financial Authority of Maine’s (FAME) program designed for first through fifth graders, Invest in ME Reads.

This year marks five years of the statewide program providing the free materials to all Maine public schools.

Mary Dyer, FAME’s Financial Education Programs Manager explains the initiative: “It includes actually a children’s book that is sent out to every student in grades one through 5, and we’ve got a book reading lot of fun activities, and we’re just really excited to celebrate this year’s launch of the program.”

For sixth graders, they can play the game surrounding future jobs, called Claim Your Future Fun Pack.

Dyer says the goal of Invest in ME Reads is to introduce concepts of financial literacy, like saving money and budgeting, as soon as possible. Not only does this benefit the child, but she says …
