PPD heightens presence to prevent weekend looting [Video]

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police are increasing their presence this weekend after social media posts have begun encouraging looting.

“It is unacceptable that individuals post on the website that they’re going to come and loot 52nd Street. Small businesses that are still struggling to come back from the last looting now have to close their doors and hire security because someone wants to put online what they’re going to do,” said Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel Friday afternoon.

He said potential target areas include Germantown Avenue, Aramingo Avenue and Center City.

Bethel says the sheer cost and fear looters put onto the city is unacceptable and they are prepared for anything that may happen.

“We’re not playing today, tomorrow, and during my tenure and under the mayor’s tenure. You’re not going to destroy the city.”

Bethel asked that parents be aware of their children’s activity this weekend.
