Nebraska lawmakers hear debate over bill addressing children social media use, personal data [Video]

LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – On Monday, lawmakers heard testimony on state Sen. Carolyn Bosn’s LB504.

It would prohibit social media platforms from using the personal data they gather on users younger than 18 for targeted advertising.

It would also require tools for parents to be able to restrict purchases—and if their child is under 13, control their privacy, account settings and screen time.

The Nebraska Legislature’s Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee heard plenty of testimony in favor of it.

“These companies know to keep children engaged and what triggers their compulsive behaviors, and what makes them click,” said pediatrician Dr. Philip Boucher. “They’ve known for years, and there’s plenty of leaked internal documents from Facebook and other companies that show that they’re aware of the actual harms that their platforms are doing. But they haven’t stopped it because nobody has stood in their way, and the money is just too good.”
