CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Lowcountry locals will now have to wait another year before getting a free horse carriage ride in downtown Charleston.
Tour operator Palmetto Carriage Works originally scheduled their annual “Locals Free Day” event for most of the day Sunday, but delayed its opening due to icy road conditions.
The company’s marketing director Susie Tecklenburg then announced Sunday morning they were canceling the event entirely because the streets on the route were still unsafe for travel.
She sent the following statement, which was also posted to their social media pages:
Unfortunately, the City of Charleston along with the Palmetto Carriage staff have determined that the streets are not safe for travel today. While many of Charleston’s streets have been cleared of snow and ice, some shaded areas along our routes remain unsafe for operation.
