Oklahoma’s newly launched “Office of Religious Liberty and Patriotism,” to be housed under the state’s Department of Education, is the latest attack on secular education in the state’s classrooms. As part of the rollout, school superintendent Ryan Walters instructed school districts to play a promotional video of himself announcing the launch, and praying for President-elect Donald Trump. The edict sparked almost immediate pushback, with at least seven school districts refusing to comply. Oklahoma’s Republican attorney general called the mandate “unenforceable.” Walters’ crusade to infuse Christian nationalism into public schools is part of a broader, coordinated campaign by Christian activists to dismantle the separation of church and state in America’s schools.Nov. 23, 2024
