When I think about the end-to-end content process, I like to divide the work into four phases.

Phase one is The Vision Phase.

This is where your content lead or content strategist builds the content strategy.

Some people like to complicate content strategy, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. And if you’re an early stage startup, it really shouldn’t be!

The purpose of your content strategy is to get everyone aligned around a few important details: WHY you’re creating content, WHO you’re speaking to, WHAT you’ll talk about across the buyer’s journey, WHERE you’ll deliver your message, and HOW you’ll know you’re successful.

After you’ve built the content strategy, it’s time to build the content plan.

Content planning is really important work because it’s how you translate your strategy into a roadmap that everyone can understand and follow.

The mistake I see a lot of people making is skipping over the content strategy and content planning and going straight to the content calendar.

But the content calendar isn’t part of The Vision Phase.

It’s part of Phase Two: The Execution Phase.

And what happens when you skip The Vision and go straight into The Execution, you end up taking ideas and requests from people across the business …

And before you know it, you’re sitting on a mountain of content that feels generic and disjointed.

Don’t be a generic banana. 🍌
