Coals pizzeria in Bayside announced on social media Friday that it will be closing permanently after Sunday night’s service.
The brief Instagram post noted that “after this weekend we’ll be putting Coals Bayside to rest. We’ll be open for regular hours while supplies last.”
The owners could not be reached immediately to ask about their decision to shutter the restaurant.
Coals, which specializes in grilled pizza, launched in 2019 at 114 Preble St., in the former Portland & Rochester Public House space.
Portland Press Herald dining critic Andrew Ross gave Coals a 3.5-star review in 2019, noting that the flat-crust grilled pizzas were inspired by the famous grilled pies from Al Forno in Providence, Rhode Island.
Coals chef and co-owner Billy Etzel founded Coals in 2004. Their Port Chester, New York, location shuttered in 2020, while the Bronxville, New York, location closed in 2022. The pizzeria still has a location open in Norwalk, Connecticut.
