DES MOINES, Iowa (Gray Media Iowa Capitol Bureau) – President-Elect Donald Trump is threatening major trading partners with hefty tariffs.
In social media posts, Trump says he plans to levy a 25% tariff on items imported from Canada and Mexico on day one, and a 10% tariff on top of additional goods imported from China. Trump says these are needed due to illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
These proposed tariffs could hike prices for consumers.
Matt Priest is the CEO of the Footwear Distributors & Retailers of America. He says 99% of footwear sold in the U.S. is imported.
He says if President-elect Trump follows through with his threat of tariffs, you’ll be footing the bill.
“Costs go up at the border, we pass those costs on to our consumers. That’s just how it works in our society. And I can tell you that any additional tariffs from the President-Elect will mean higher prices and inflation.,” he said.
