CHARLOTTE, N.C. — As our neighbors to the west struggle to regain any sense of normalcy following the horrific damage caused by Helene; those with heavy heart and wanting to help, need to be on the lookout for potential scammers and fake charities.
Joining us with more on what to keep an eye out for is Juliana O’Rork from the ‘Better Business Bureau’. “It’s so sad we even need to be talking about this giving all the devastation” says O’Rork.
She adds “after a disaster, scammers often set up fake donation websites, social media campaigns, and crowdfunding pages that appear to support relief efforts. These fraudulent campaigns use emotional appeals to urge people to donate immediately. Scammers may even impersonate well-known charities or pose as individuals seeking help through crowdfunding platforms. Scammers are good at pulling on the strings of your heart to get you to give. “
