New body set up in Dublin to handle social media complaints [Video]

A new body based in Dublin has been created to resolve appeals against policy violation decisions made by social media companies.

Appeals Centre Europe will hear cases relating to Facebook, TikTok and YouTube from people and organisations in Ireland and across the EU by the end of the year, but its remit will expand to include more social media platforms over time.

The centre will hear complaints about decisions by the platforms relating to issues such as the removal of content and the suspension of users’ accounts.

Appeals Centre Europe has been certified by media regulator Coimisiún na Meán as an out-of-court dispute settlement body under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), but its decisions will be non-binding.

The Oversight Board Trust, which is funded by Meta but operated independently of the social media giant, is funding the launch of the Appeals Centre.

Once launched, it will be funded through fees charged to social media companies for each case.
