Professional Development Series: So You Want to Work for a Startup? Panel Discussion

Have you ever considered working for a startup? On Tuesday, July 2, from 12 to 1 p.m., our speakers joined us for a lunch panel diving into the startup employment experience. Do startups hire interns? What is it like working for a new company? We learned the answers to these questions and hear the stories of the following panelists by attending this event.

Josie Suter is a Lead Mechanical Engineer at Research Park startup EarthSense, a company empowering farmers to regenerate their lands with autonomous, AI-powered robots. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering in 2020. Suter’s previous experience includes working as an intern for Caterpillar and EarthSense before going full-time with the company in 2021.

Michael McGuire is a Computer Vision Engineer at EarthSense. He received a bachelor’s in computer science from the University of Illinois in 2020 and started working at EarthSense that same year. As the Lead Computer Vision Engineer McGuire oversees projects, leads a team of engineers, researches the newest approaches in the field, and guides the development and implementation of autonomous perception algorithms.

Amulya Nimmagadda is the Director of R&D at Cache Energy in EnterpriseWorks. Cache focuses on creating energy storage that is safe to install anywhere and transported everywhere through long-duration electricity storage. Nimmagadda’s experience includes a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Illinois and work with finite element analysis, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and more.

The panel was moderated by Gerald Wilson, Director of Entrepreneurship at Research Park.
