Abraham Lincolns wax statue to be removed early after melting in DC heat [Video]

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — After the sweltering heat hit the DMV hot and heavy, one wax statue couldn’t beat the heat.

In front of the Garrison Elementary School, located on 1200 S Street, once was a six-foot replica of D.C.’s Lincoln Memorial. The work of art representing, Abraham Lincoln made its debut in the District on Feb. 15. It was commissioned by CulturalDC as part of the Public Art Building Communities Grant.

CulturalDC said the installation was the result of a direct commentary on D.C.’s history of the Civil War era Contraband Camps, refugee camps that housed formerly enslaved and free African Americans.

But, as heat scorched the DMV and hit a record-breaking high, the statue began to melt.

“A little less statuesque than the one on the mall, but fun. Poor guy,” said Laurie Batschi.
